People throughout history showed interest for frauds and lies, some of them created them, while others believed in them.
If you watched the movie Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford in the main role, you probably got thrilled by the adventure and the ease with which popular “Indy” reached epic ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDINGS. The reality is somewhat different…Some dig sites or findings do not represent always what we think they are, and so end up in fiasco, and archeologist is exposed to ridicule and laughter.
Archeologist in 1912 (Piltdown), allegedly a fossil which represented a missing link in the evolution of a man. Skull and lower jaw lead the scientist to think that they are dealing with a pre-human who ties a monkey and modern man. 10JAMES OSSUARY
It is the ancient burial box with the inscription “James, Son of Joseph, brother of Jesus”. Revealed to the press in 2002, most scholars believe it to be a modern forgery.
09BERINGER´S LYING STONES
In 1725 Professor Beringer found outrageous fossils – in fact planted by his ex-colleagues. He published a book on his discovery before realizing it was a hoax. His career was ruined.
08THE CALAVERAS SKULL
Skull found in 1866 indicating that mankind hadn’t undergone evolutionary change for over a million years. This practical joke is still cited by as real evidence.
07TIARA OF SAIT AFERNE
Bought by Louvre for 200.000 francs in 1896, after six years of debate about its origins, the artist who had made the fake came forward.
06THE WORK OF SHINICHI FUJIMURA
Archeologist Fujimura was involved in 180 digs and his findings changed early Japanese history. Exposed as a fraud in 2000, he bought “artifacts” to bury at digs and would then “discover” them.
05FEEJEE MERMAID
It displayed by circus owner P.T. Barnum in 1882. Later found to be a fish tail, baby orangutan torso and head of a monkey stitched together.
04THE CARDIFF GIANT
Petrified remains of a ten foot giant found in 1869 and sold for 37.500 dollar. Revealed as a hoax by a tobacconist trying to prove how gullible the public was.
03PILTDOWN MAN
It is a skull with a large area for the brain, but primitive jaw. Found in the UK in 1912. Some 40 years later, it was found to be a human skull mixed with an ape´s jaw.
02SHROUD OF TURIN
Shroud bearing Christ´s image after the crucifixion. How it was made remains a mystery. Carbon dating indicates that the cloth originates from some-time between 1260 and 1390.
01THE PERSIAN MUMMY
It is the 2.500 year-old mummy of a Persian Princess discovered in 2000. A fake, it was concluded that the corpse had been murdered recently – possibly for the hoax.
