National Air Force and Space Administration (NASA) was founded in 1958 and is responsible for civil part of space program of SAD. Agency is also responsible to long term civil and military researches and the field of Air Force. When founding, it was comprised by four laboratories with about 8.000 employees.
Maybe the most important contribution to the development of rocket program had its roots in Nazi Germany, in the form of a scientist Verner von Braun, who is considered as the father of rocket program of SAD who was at the time one of the leader of rocket program. Apart from many inventions and contributions that served the needs of NASE, there are those inventions that found their application in our everyday life. What are those contributions for which we owe out thanks to NASA, you will find out in this attachment.
10INVISIBLE BRACES
Clear ceramic braces come from translucent polycrystalline alumina. TRA is incredibly strong and was used by NASA to protect infrared detectors.
09FREEZE – DRIED MEALS
Foodstuffs for the Apollo missions and now sold worldwide. Such food retains 98 percent of its nutritional values but weighs 80 percent less.
08EAR THERMOMETER
These thermometers use infrared sensor to measure heat given off by the eardrum. NASA develop the technology to monitor the temperature of stars.
07SWIMSUITS
Using rubber covered in tiny grooves reduces drag and makes swimsuit 10 percent faster. NASA originally used these riblets in aerospace components.
06MEMORY FOAM
Created for NASA aircraft seats to soften landing and now used in mattresses. Returns to its original shape even if compresses to 10percent of its size.
05LONG – LIFE TIRES
The Viking landers´ parachutes used a material five times stronger than steel. His technology helped to extend the life of road tired by 10.000 miles.
04SCRATCH – RESISTANT LENSES
Astronauts´ visors used a diamond like carbon coating to prevent scratches. Now used to give glasses 10 times the conventional scratch resistance.
03ADJUSTABLE SMOKE DETECTOR
These alarm have various sensitivity levels to prevent false alarms. They were developed for use on the Skylab space station.
02WATER FILTER
Domestic water filter system is derived from those used on the Apollo spacecraft. These used filters that sanitized water via silver ionization.
01CORDLESS TOOLS
In order to take samples, the moon landings required drills. Cordless, battery-powered tools were born.
