Mars is the fourth planet of the Solar system according to the distance from the Sun. It got its name for Roman god of war Mars. It also called the red planet because of its reddish glow when it is watched from Earth. Mars is located 227 940 000 km from the Sun, it has a diameter of 6794 km and mass of 6,4219×1023 kg. Around Mars two small natural satellites orbit of irregular shape, Phobos and Deimos.
Until the first flight to Mars by a craft Mariner 41965, it was thought that on the surface of the planet there is liquid water. This was based on the observance of periodic variations in the color of the surface, especially in polar longitudes which looked like seas and continents, while some observers interpreted long and dark furrows as channels for irrigation. Later it turned out that these straight lines don’t exist and that they are optical illusions. Still, of all the planets in the Solar system apart from Earth, Mars is most likely to hold liquid water and perhaps life. Apart from numerous and STRANGE PLANETS even Mars has its secrets and mysteries… Find out about which secrets I am talking about.
10MARS ONE
“Mars one” is a project to colonize Mars. Beginning in 2022, had an open application policy. The one-way adventure has had more than 100.000 applicants.
09MAPPING MARS
There are better maps of the surface of Mars than there are of our ocean floors. This has allowed discovery of features such as Galle, or the “happy face crater.”
08DEIMOS
Mars´ smallest moon, Deimos has an escape velocity of 5 GM/S. You could take a running jump to launch off its surface.
07OWNERSHIP
Three Yemeni men sued NASA for trespassing on Mars. They claimed they had inherited it 3.000 years ago from their ancestors.
06ZAMBIAN SPACE PROGRAM
In the 1960s Zambia had a space program. They planned to use a giant catapult to hurl an aluminium rocket to Mars and trained by rolling inside a barrel down a hill.
05OLYMPUS MONS
The tallest mountain in the Solar system, standing at 14 miles (22km) high and you cannot see it all from the surface. As it stretches over the curvature of Mars so is always past the horizon.
04RED PLANET
Mars has its color because it is essentially covered in rust. The last percentage of iron on the planet creates dust which is carried into the atmosphere and reflects red light.
03MARS ROCKS
Meteorites found in Antarctica and the Sahara desert, are from Mars. It is thought an asteroid impact or huge volcanic eruption launched them to Earth.
02GUZMAN PRIZE
In 1900 a 100.000 franc prize was offered to anyone who could communicate with alien life. Mars was exempted as it was not considered a challenge to communicate with Martians.
01 CURIOSITY MUSIC
The Mars rover is awoken each day by a themed song for what it will do. When it took pictures, “I can see clearly now” was played and when it gathered rocks “we will rock you” played.
