Acts of terror are no longer a phenomenon that can be conveniently ignored by the masses. In fact, with extremists continually seeking weapons of mass destruction, the threat of terrorism are everywhere. With our attention so attuned, here is a list of 10 of the deadliest, and most notorious, acts of terror.
10PAN AM Flight 103
In 1988 a plane exploded in the sky above Lockerbie, Scotland. 258 onboard and 11 on the ground were killed. Libyan leader Gaddafi took responsibility.
09Russian apartment bombing
A series of bombing in 1999 killed 293 people and wounded 1742. Chechen militants targeted apartment buildings in Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk.
08Beirut Barracks bombing
299 U.S. and French military personnel died in attacks on a marine compound. A dump truck filled with 5400 kg of explosive ploughed into 2 barracks in 1983.
07Air India Flight 182
A bomb planted by Sikh militants Babbar Khalsa exploded mid – air off the coast of Ireland. The 1985 attack killed all 329 onboard including 82 children.
06Beslan school siege
330 died – over half were children – when armed militants raided a Russian school. Students were held in the gym, surrounded with explosive.
05Gamboru Ngala attack
Boko Haram raided a Nigerian town in 2014 massacring 300 residents. Soldiers had left the town unguarded in a bid to rescue 200 girls kidnapped by the terrorists.
04Cinema rex fire
An Iranian cinema was doused in gasoline and set alight in august 1978. 442 burned to death in the attack by Islamic fundamentalists.
03Sri Lankan police massacre
600 surrendered police officers were killed by the Tamil Tigers in 1990. The victims were taken to the Tirukovil jungles, blindfolded and shot.
02Yazidi bombings
In August 2007 multiple suicide bombs exploded in Northwest Iraq, killing 344 people. Over 600 were made homeless in a blast which destroyed entire neighborhoods.
01September 11
19 members of Al-Qaeda hijacked planes in four co-ordinated attacks in 2001. They flew into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing almost 3000 people
