10 STRANGE MYTHICAL CREATURES

Different mythical creatures probably don’t just come out of one myth, but are spontaneously included in mythology of numerous cultures around the world. They are usually portrayed as beings like snakes or lizards that hatch from eggs, and have elongated bodies covered with scales; almost always they are portrayed with big eyes, and often (but not always) and with wings breading fire. Sometimes they are portrayed as people with heads of animals, goat’s tale, ears and hooves.

10BAKE-DANUKI

“BAKE-DANUKI” is a shape-shifting raccoon-like creature with a giant scrotum symbolizing good luck. Japanese in origin, it is the inspiration for Mario´s Tanooki suit.

Lambton Worm is a giant eel creature, that grow in a well in Durham (UK) and is the center of an epic song. Able to regenerate, it was killed in a river, so its chopped off parts floated away.

“KARAKASA-OBAKE” is an umbrella that has come to life on its 100th birthday, often one-eyed and one-legged, with a long tongue, unclear whether they are helpful or malevolent.

In medieval bestiaries it is a homed bull animal from Asia. Can spray acidic manure for a distance of three acres, immolating anything it touches.

“BAKHTAK” is a Iranian creature that sits on your chest while you sleep, causing nightmares and sleep paralysis. He is known as the Old Hag in England and the Mars in Scandinavia.

“CIGBIN” is a Philippine monster with a crow-like body and two long legs below its head. Able to jump great distances, it prowls the night looking for children to eat.

04BLEMMYES

“BLEMMYES” IS AN African humanoid that has its face on its chest. Mentioned in Othello, in some stories they are cannibals, in others they have no brains.

03MANANANGGAL

Resembling a woman with wings, she hunts pregnant women at night and sucks out the hearts of fetuses. She severs her upper torso to fly and must rejoin her lower half by dawn or die.

02FENGHAUNG

The “Chinese Phoenix”, composed of a rooster´s beak, swallow´s face, fowl´s tortoise´s back stag´s hindquarters, goose´s breast and a fish´s tail.

01YARA.MA-YHA-WHO

Australian monster who drains its victim of blood, returning later to consume them. In the vomits them out, which slowly changes them into a “YARA.MA-YHA-WHO”.
